“General, sir!”
Alric looked up at the sound of the panicked voice. Oh, this would be good, he was sure of it. The day had been getting better since he had noticed one of his private seals missing, and he already suspected where it had run off to. He only hoped that panic did not mean complete and utter incompetence.
“Enter,” he said smoothly.
A soldier burst into his office as if the coattails of his jacket were alight. He snapped a quick salute and seemed to try and catch breath now that he was in the presence of the man in charge. Alric let the soldier without a word, though he tapped his fingers impatiently on his desk.
After a moment, the soldier seemed to gather himself correctly and stood at attention. “General, sir, there has been a issue with the camp! A woman and a man entered under your seal, sir. They said it was a surprise inspection…”
Alric nodded his head slowly. That woman was becoming a mild thorn in his side. He should have killed her when he had the chance instead of sparing her life. “When have I ever ordered a surprise inspection where I have not attained it myself?”
“Er… never, sir,” the soldier stammered. He seemed to pale some as Alric walked around the desk and stood there. “Sir… they escaped and only managed some minor damage.”
Nodding slowly again, Alric made sure to make this soldier squirm. “The woman… what did she look like?”
“I have been told short black hair and green eyes, sir. She could fight though,” the soldier said and shuffled a little. “The man was taller than her,” he said.
Alric managed to drag enough details to confirm to himself that his suspicions were correct. Why enter a camp and demand Jews removed from the ovens? Probably… because the little bird was running around with a Jew. It made sense. So, little Phoenix was conspiring with Jews; that was a capital punishment, one worthy of a considerable amount of his attention.
He smirked a little. “Find Dietrich, Corperal. He is going on a little hunt for me,” he murmured. “I want all the trains leaving Warsaw from here to the Polish border stopped and inspected. Any two that match such descriptions are to be hauled off the trains and executed immediately.”
“But sir, the amount of innocence…”
“Will be none of your concern,” Alric said with a steely voice. He gave no room for argument as he turned around and walked back to his desk. “…kill the men first then the women. Consider all individuals matching such descriptions to be dangerous, so I will not mind if they are shot on the train as well.”
“Yessir!”
“Get out of my sight,” Alric said coldly, watching out of the corner of his eye as the soldier near-scampered from his sight. “You take my kindness too far, Phoenix. I’ll have your Jewish playmate down on his knees before I kill you.”
Bending, he began to write up telegrams to be sent all over Poland warning of the danger. He wouldn’t allow them to escape out of Poland alive. It was awfully cute to see the brash woman finally do enough to warrant a national-wide hunt. This could be entertaining.
